A fair question, and one of the most persistent myths we hear at survey. Here’s what the numbers actually say.
How loud is a heat pump really?
UK regulations cap the sound pressure of a heat pump’s outdoor unit at 42dB, measured at your nearest openable window. To put that in context, a fridge humming in your kitchen sits around 40dB, and a typical gas or oil boiler runs somewhere around 50-55dB. In practice, most people say they can barely hear their heat pump running once it’s sited properly. It’s a steady, low background hum rather than anything intrusive.
Where should it sit?
We avoid positioning the outdoor unit directly under a bedroom window or hard against a neighbour’s boundary wall where sound can reflect and carry. This is standard practice at every survey: we walk the outside of your property with you and agree the position before anything’s fitted, not after.
Will it disturb the neighbours?
With a sensibly sited, correctly installed unit, it shouldn’t. We’re conscious that terraced and semi-detached properties across Whitley Bay and North Tyneside often sit close to a neighbour’s garden, so we factor that into the survey and, where it’s a Grade II listed or conservation area property, into any consent process too.
Does the noise level change with the weather?
You may notice a brief, slightly louder cycle during cold, damp conditions, which is the unit running a defrost cycle to clear frost from the outdoor coil.
It’s normal, short-lived, and part of how the system protects its own efficiency in winter. Outside of that, fan speed adjusts automatically to demand, so on milder days the unit runs quieter still. Regular servicing keeps it running as designed, which is worth keeping on top of.
