Air source, ground source or a hybrid system: which suits a Newcastle property?
One of the first questions we get at survey stage, and honestly, most homeowners have heard all three terms and none of the explanations. Here’s the straight version.
What's the difference between an air source and a ground source heat pump?
An air source heat pump (ASHP) pulls heat out of the outside air using an outdoor unit about the size of a large suitcase. It’s what we install on the vast majority of North East homes, because it needs very little outdoor space and no groundworks.
A ground source heat pump (GSHP) instead draws heat from pipes buried in your garden, either in horizontal trenches or a vertical borehole. Ground temperature stays fairly constant year-round, so a GSHP can run slightly more efficiently in the depths of winter, but it needs a garden big enough for the groundwork, and the install cost and disruption are considerably higher.
For the terraced, semi-detached and bungalow properties we see most often around Whitley Bay and North Tyneside, an ASHP is almost always the sensible starting point.
What's a hybrid system, and when does it make sense?
A hybrid pairs an air source heat pump with your existing gas or oil boiler. The heat pump does the day-to-day heavy lifting, and the boiler only kicks in on the coldest days or to top up hot water demand. It’s a genuinely useful option for older, harder-to-insulate properties where a full heat pump system might have to work too hard on its own to keep the house comfortable.
You get most of the running cost savings without a full re-design of your heating system. We’ll only recommend it where it earns its place, not as a default.
So which one would you actually recommend for my home?
Honestly, it depends on your radiators, your insulation, and your garden, which is exactly why we do a proper home survey rather than quote over the phone.

What actually happens at the home heat pump survey?
We do a room-by-room heat loss calculation rather than a five-minute look round, checking wall construction, glazing, loft and cavity insulation, and your existing radiators so we know whether any need upsizing for a lower flow temperature.
We’ll check your hot water cylinder, agree the outdoor unit position with you, and talk through MCS paperwork and grant eligibility on the spot.
