Solar panels with or without a battery: do you actually need one?

No, you don’t need a battery to make solar worthwhile. A panels-only system is a genuinely good investment on its own. A battery helps most if you are out during the day and use power in the evening, because it stores your daytime surplus instead of exporting it for less than you would pay to buy it back. For plenty of homes, panels alone are the right call.

Do you need a battery to get solar at all?

No. This is the most common assumption we correct, and it costs people money. A panels-only system generates electricity, you use what you can while it is being produced, and the surplus is exported to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee. No battery, no added complexity, and it stands up as an investment on its own.

A battery is an optional upgrade, not a requirement. It is the most common starting point for a reason: it is simpler, cheaper up front, and gets you generating without the extra kit. You can often add a battery later, which we come back to below.

How does a battery change the maths?

A battery earns its place by turning cheap exported units into units you use yourself, which are worth more. The difference is the whole argument.

Under the July 2026 price cap, a unit you buy from the grid costs roughly 26p (per Ofgem). A unit you export earns you around 12 to 15p on a good Smart Export Guarantee tariff. So every unit of your own generation you use instead of export is worth roughly double. Without a battery, most homes use 30 to 50% of what they generate. With a battery storing the daytime surplus for the evening, that self-consumption typically rises to 70 to 80%.

That is the upside. The catch is that a battery adds a chunk to the up-front cost, and it reduces your SEG income because you are exporting less. Whether the extra self-consumption outweighs the extra cost depends entirely on your usage pattern, which is why we work it out at survey rather than assuming.

Who does a battery actually suit?

A battery pays back fastest for homes that generate power during the day but use most of it at night. If the house is empty from eight until six and the washing machine, oven and TV all run in the evening, a panels-only system exports most of its generation cheaply and buys it back expensively. A battery closes that gap.

It also suits homes on a time-of-use tariff, where you can charge the battery on cheap overnight rates and run off it at peak times, and homes with an EV or plans for one. If you are home during the day and already using power while the sun is out, the extra self-consumption a battery buys you is smaller, and the up-front cost takes longer to earn back. For those households, panels alone often make more sense.

What's the honest downside of a battery?

There are three, and none of them are dealbreakers, but you should know them. A battery adds a significant amount to the install cost. It is another component with its own lifespan, so it is one more thing that may need attention over the years. And it lowers what you earn from exporting, because you are keeping more of your generation rather than selling it.

Can you add a battery later?

Often, yes, but it depends on your existing inverter and setup. If you know a battery is likely down the line, mention it at survey. Specifying a hybrid inverter now makes adding storage later far simpler than retrofitting to a system that wasn’t planned for it. If the possibility of an EV charger is also on your radar, flag that too, because it can affect how we size and specify the system today.

The deciding factor is your daily pattern, not a rule of thumb. If you are out all day and busy in the evening, a battery probably earns its keep. If you are home and using power while the panels are generating, panels alone likely serve you better and get you started for less.
