How are solar panels actually fixed to the roof?
Panels are not simply screwed onto the tiles. Mounting brackets are fixed into the rafters, the structural timbers under the roof covering, and rails run across those brackets to carry the panels. Where a bracket passes through the roof covering, it is sealed and flashed to keep water out. Done to standard, the roof stays weathertight.
MCS-certified installs follow set standards for this, and the electrical side is notified under building control by the installer. The point of a proper mounting system is that the load goes into the structure, not the surface, and the weatherproofing is designed in rather than bodged.
Can solar panels cause leaks or damage?
Rarely, with a proper install. When roof problems do happen, they almost always trace back to poor workmanship: a fixing that wasn’t sealed correctly, flashing that wasn’t finished, or brackets fixed to battens instead of rafters. That is an installer failure, not a fault of solar itself.
This is why the workmanship warranty matters. A reputable installer’s workmanship guarantee covers the roof penetrations and the integrity of the install, separate from the manufacturer’s warranty on the panels themselves. It is worth asking any installer what their workmanship warranty covers and for how long. If a quote comes in unusually cheap, the sealing and mounting detail is often where the corner has been cut.
What do we check at survey?
Before anything goes on the roof, we assess whether the roof can take it and whether it should. That means the structure, the condition of the tiles or slates, the age of the covering, and any spots that already look tired. We also look at orientation, pitch and shading from chimneys, trees or neighbours, since those affect where panels go and how they perform.

Why you fix the roof first, not after
If your roof is near the end of its life or needs repair, sort that before the panels go up. The reason is simple economics. It is far cheaper to fix a roof while the scaffolding is already there and no panels are in the way than to remove a full array, do the work, and refit it later.
There is an upside worth knowing too. The section of roof under the panels is sheltered from direct sun, rain and weather, so panels can actually protect the area they cover rather than wear it out. Which roofs suit solar, and which need care?
Most standard pitched roofs in tile or slate are straightforward, which covers the bulk of Newcastle and North East housing. A clear, reasonably south-facing pitch is the easy case. East or west-facing pitches still work well.
Some roofs need more thought. Flat roofs suit solar fitted on a tilted mounting frame, but need a structural check first. Older or more fragile coverings are assessed case by case, and occasionally the answer is to renew the roof first.
