Why is the bottom of my radiator cold? Power flushing explained

A radiator that is hot at the top and cold at the bottom is full of sludge. Magnetite, the black iron oxide that builds up in older central heating systems, settles to the bottom and blocks flow. A power flush clears it, restores efficiency, and is required by Worcester Bosch to register the full warranty on a new boiler. Below, what’s happening and what an honest flush costs.

What a cold-at-the-bottom radiator is telling you

If your radiator is hot at the top and noticeably cooler (or cold) at the bottom, the cause is sludge. Specifically, magnetite, a black iron oxide that forms as the steel internal surfaces of radiators corrode over years. It settles to the bottom of the radiator under gravity, blocks the lower flow path, and water bypasses the cold zone.

The diagnosis is simple. Cold at the top means air, which bleeds out in 30 seconds with a radiator key. Cold at the bottom means sludge, which does not bleed out and is not cleared by any DIY tap-or-bang fix.

The longer the system runs with sludge in it, the more it builds. The magnetite circulates with the water and finds its way into the boiler’s heat exchanger, where it deposits on hot surfaces, reduces efficiency, and eventually damages the heat exchanger itself. Worcester Bosch will refuse a warranty claim on a heat exchanger that has failed due to system sludge.

The fix is a power flush, occasionally a chemical flush, and the fitting of a magnetic filter to catch ongoing magnetite before it reaches the boiler. We cover all three below.

The other signs your system needs a flush

Cold-at-the-bottom radiators are the most obvious sign. Three others are worth knowing.

The black water test. Bleed a radiator into a clean white container. Clean system water is colourless or very pale yellow. System water with sludge is grey, brown or black. The darker the water, the worse the sludge.

Radiators slow to warm up. A system in good order warms its radiators to full temperature in 10 to 20 minutes. A sludged system can take 30 to 60 minutes, with some radiators never reaching full temperature, because the pump is moving thicker water through restricted bores.

Boiler noises (kettling, rumbling). A boiler that rumbles, knocks or sounds like a kettle when the heating fires has sludge deposits on the heat exchanger. The deposits create hot spots where water vaporises into steam, then collapses, which is what produces the noise. This is the sound of an expensive component being damaged.

One of the three signs alone is enough to investigate. Two or more, you almost certainly need a flush.

What a proper power flush includes

A power flush uses a specialised pumping unit (the flushing machine, usually a Kamco, Fernox or MagnaCleanse) to push high-velocity water through the system in alternating directions, dislodging sludge and drawing it out through the machine’s filtration. It takes 4 to 8 hours depending on the system size and the level of sludge.

The work covers:

Connection of the flushing machine to the boiler return, or to a dedicated flushing point on the system. The boiler is isolated and drained.

Sequential flushing of each radiator individually, with the others isolated, so the flow concentrates on one radiator at a time. The engineer agitates the radiator (gently tapping with a rubber mallet) to loosen deposits while it is being flushed.

Chemical descaler and inhibitor dosing during the flush, to dissolve limescale and to coat the internal surfaces against future corrosion.

A final clean-water rinse and inhibitor top-up before the system is returned to service. The fitting of a magnetic filter (Fernox TF1, MagnaClean or equivalent) on the system return, which captures any magnetite that forms after the flush.

Power flush vs chemical flush vs magnetic filter: which do you need?

The three are sometimes confused, often by quotes that bundle the cheapest one and call it the most expensive.

Magnetic filter only (£150 to £250 fitted). The cheapest option. The filter catches ongoing magnetite but does not clear existing sludge. Right for a clean or near-clean system as preventive maintenance. Wrong for a system that already has cold-at-bottom radiators.

Chemical flush (£250 to £400 fitted). An inhibitor cleaner is dosed into the system, left to circulate for 24 to 48 hours, then the system is drained and refilled with fresh inhibitor. Clears light sludge. Right for a moderately dirty system or as a preventive step before a new boiler install. Wrong for a heavily sludged system, because the chemical alone cannot dislodge thick deposits.

Power flush (£450 to £650 fitted). The mechanical flush as described above, with chemicals, with the magnetic filter fitted. The right answer when you have cold radiators, black bleed water, or a system over 10 years old that has never been flushed.

If a quote offers a ‘flush’ at £150, what you are buying is the magnetic filter and an inhibitor top-up. That is fine on its own terms, but it is not a power flush and will not clear an already sludged system.

How long a flush takes and what to expect on the day

A power flush takes 4 to 8 hours on a typical Newcastle three-bed system. Allow a full day from 8am to 5pm to be safe. The engineer needs:

Access to every radiator, including isolating valves at each end. If your radiator valves are old, seized or hidden behind fitted furniture, flag it at booking, and we will quote the access work separately if needed.

Access to the boiler and the system filling loop. The boiler is off for most of the day. If you need heating that day (cold weather, vulnerable household members), arrange backup heating in advance.

A 13A power socket near the boiler for the flushing machine, and a drain or outside tap to discharge the dirty water. We bring everything else.

The water that comes out is dirty. Some of the dirt may be unpleasant (black, sometimes smelling of iron). The engineer will dispose of it responsibly. Your carpets and floors will be protected with sheets, but if you have particularly delicate flooring around radiators, flag it.

After the flush, the system is refilled with fresh water and the inhibitor, the magnetic filter is fitted, and the boiler is recommissioned. Radiators are bled, the system is brought up to temperature, and the engineer leaves a written report.

Why a flush is often required before a new boiler is fitted

Worcester Bosch’s warranty terms assume a clean system. If you fit a new boiler onto a sludged system, two things happen:

The new boiler runs the sludge through its new heat exchanger from day one. The deposits cause hot spots, the heat exchanger fails inside warranty period, and Worcester Bosch refuse the claim because the system was not clean. The most expensive component on the new boiler is out of cover.

Efficiency drops well below the boiler’s rated 92 to 94 percent, because the boiler is heating water that is not flowing freely through the radiators. You paid for a new high-efficiency boiler and you get a new low-efficiency installation.

For these reasons, we routinely include a power flush (or, on moderately clean systems, a chemical flush) in the quote for any boiler install on a property over 8 years old. The flush adds £400 to £650 to the fitted price (see our cost guide) but it protects the £3,000 boiler that follows.

A competitor quote that fits a new boiler onto an unflushed sludged system without telling you about it is cheaper today and an expensive warranty disaster in three years. We tell you at survey what your system needs.

If your system shows the signs in the second section above, a power flush is the right answer. Booking is straightforward. We do a brief phone diagnostic first (radiator count, age of system, the obvious symptoms), then book a full-day slot at an agreed date.
