What goes wrong with air conditioning in a UK home?
Air conditioning in a UK home runs reliably for 10 to 15 years if it is installed properly. The real problems trace back to four causes: undersized units, poor pipework, missed annual service, and uncertified installs. Refrigerant leaks, water leaks, weak cooling and noise complaints almost all sit on top of one of those four. Below, what each looks like and how to spot a bad install.

Undersized units that never reach the set temperature
The most common problem with a UK home AC install is a unit that is too small for the room. It runs constantly, never quite reaches the set temperature, and burns more electricity doing it than a properly sized unit would.
The cause is almost always at the quote stage. An installer who has not measured the room properly, or who is trying to hit a low headline price, fits a 2.5kW unit where a 3.5kW unit was needed. The customer notices in the first heatwave when the bedroom still sits at 24°C with the unit at full power.
The fix is replacement, which means the original install was wasted money. The way to avoid it is a proper sizing calculation at survey, based on room volume, ceiling height, window orientation, glazing type, and insulation. A good Worcester Bosch quote shows the calculation, not just the model number.
Refrigerant leaks and what they actually cost to fix
Modern AC uses R32 refrigerant, which has roughly one third the global warming potential of older R410A (per gov.uk’s F-Gas guidance). A properly installed system loses negligible refrigerant over its 10 to 15 year life.
When a leak does happen, it is almost always at a flare joint in the copper pipework, made during the original install. A leak shows up as gradual loss of cooling power over weeks or months. The unit still blows air, but the air comes out less cold.
A leak diagnosis and refrigerant top-up costs £200 to £500. A leak that has gone unnoticed for years and damaged the compressor costs more, often into four figures. The way to avoid it: a proper pressure test at install, which holds the system at pressure for at least 30 minutes and confirms no drop, and an annual service that checks pressures every year afterwards.
Water leaks from the indoor unit, what is normal and what is not
The indoor unit produces condensate as a normal part of cooling. The condensate drains through a small pipe inside the unit, out through the wall, and away to ground or a drain. Properly installed, you never see it.
When water appears below the indoor unit, the cause is one of three things. The drain pipe has a sag in it, allowing water to pool and then back up. The drain is blocked with algae growth, which happens if the unit has not been serviced. Or the indoor unit was installed slightly off-level, so the condensate runs the wrong way inside the unit.
None of those are catastrophic. The first two are fixed at annual service. The third is a re-mount of the indoor unit, which a Worcester Bosch accredited installer should do under the workmanship warranty if it shows up in the first 12 months.
Pipework failures: insulation, pressure, hidden damage
The copper pipework between the indoor unit and the outdoor unit carries refrigerant under pressure. It also has to be insulated, because cold pipework running through a warm wall cavity will sweat and cause damp.
Three things go wrong with pipework. Insulation stripped or skipped to save time at install, which causes condensation inside the wall cavity. Pipe bends that are kinked or over-tightened, restricting flow and shortening compressor life. And pipe runs that are too long for the system’s specification, which the installer should have flagged and adjusted for at quote.
Pipework failures are usually invisible until the unit underperforms, by which point the wall may also have damp damage. The way to avoid it: a quote that specifies the pipe run length, a written commitment to insulate the full run, and an installer who is not running pipe through finished walls without your sign-off.
Missed annual service and what that does over five years
Annual service is required to keep the manufacturer warranty valid. It also matters operationally: a unit serviced every year runs at close to its rated efficiency for its full 10 to 15 year life. A unit not serviced will lose 10 to 15% of its efficiency by year five.
What an annual service involves: cleaning the indoor unit filter, cleaning the outdoor unit coils and fan, checking refrigerant pressures, testing the electrical connections, and confirming the drain is clear. Twenty to forty minutes per indoor unit, logged for warranty purposes.
The cost is £150 to £250 a year. Skipping it saves the £150, voids the warranty, and quietly degrades the unit. A leak that develops after the warranty has been voided is on the homeowner. We recommend booking the service for spring before peak summer use.
Uncertified installs and the F-Gas problem
F-Gas certification is legally required for any UK installer working with refrigerant (per gov.uk’s F-Gas regulations). An installer without F-Gas certification cannot legally fit AC. They sometimes do anyway, usually at a price £500 to £1,000 below the proper market.
Three things follow from an uncertified install. The manufacturer warranty is void, because Worcester Bosch and other brands require certified install for the guarantee to apply. The home insurance position is unclear, because some insurers exclude work done by uncertified contractors. And the install itself is more likely to leak, because uncertified installers do not pressure-test as standard.
The way to check: ask for the installer’s F-Gas certification number on the quote. It is a public number, traceable to a registered company. An installer who hesitates or refuses is the one to walk away from.
What to ask before you sign a quote
Five questions that filter most install problems out at the quote stage.
What is your F-Gas certification number? What is the cooling load calculation for the room? How long is the pipe run, and is it being insulated end to end? What is the workmanship warranty in writing? And how much is the annual service afterwards?
An installer who answers all five quickly and in writing is the one to trust. An installer who answers two of them and waves the rest away is the one whose install you will be ringing about in three years.

Putting the four causes together
